Content curation vs. content creation: What’s the difference?

It’s a constant battle trying to keep your social media on point, relevant and interesting to read. But it’s the content that makes it, and hopefully keeps people coming back for more.

So should you create, or curate? In this article we’ll take a quick look at the difference between content creation and content curation, and why both are important to the success of your business. Why not also check out our blogon attracting customers to your business while you are here?

Creating content

You’re the expert in your field, so you should just create content all the time right? Wrong! Sure, creation is important and it’s what brings your customers in and keeps them wanting more, but it’s not the only way. When you create content, you’re putting down your own thoughts, ideas and knowledge for people to read and understand. But curation is essential too.

So what’s curation then?

When you curate something, you gather it or collect it, like a curator of fine art or antiques. This isn’t the same as plagiarism or theft, as you are merely gathering ideas and thoughts of others to base your content on. This in turn enriches your social media brand.

Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a replacement for your own content though – it isn’t. What it does do though is it allows you to broaden your appeal to your customers. This means you’ll hopefully then generate more traffic– and more business.

Still confused?

Let’s look at an example. Say you run a book sales website, you’ve just finished reading the first Harry Potter book and you write an article based on your own thoughts and ideas. This would be your own content and you haven’t needed information from anywhere but your own head. High fives, likes and shares all round.

However if you hadn’t read it, but you obviously still want to promote sales of it, you would need to curate content from other sources such as links, media or blogs in order to attract people to your website. And the even better news is that LeadSocial can manage all of this for you! We can put together the perfect social media content strategy for you, leaving you to run your business and watch the likes and shares skyrocket.

Why do I need to be thinking about all of this?

Many businesses pour a lot of time and money into their website and social media platforms, but often fall into the trap of thinking once it is up and running, it will look after itself. Think of a shop window – you wouldn’t leave all your old stock on display, looking tired and dusty would you? The same applies to your social media! Keep it looking fresh, relevant and interesting by letting LeadSocial take the strain and manage your content for you. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes.

Has all of this got you thinking about your social media?
