How to do social media marketing well

Social media has been around for years now and many of us are very familiar with it. But how can you actually make a good job of marketing your business on social media effectively? We’ve dived in and taken a look at the top things to consider.

  1. Choose your platform wisely

Whether you go for Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook or any random combination of them all, which platform you choose will largely depend on your audience and your resources. Remember, it’s better to only have one or two platforms that work well for you than loads of them that you struggle to stay on top of.

  1. Know your audience

Only when you know exactly who you want to attract can you create a social media strategy that really works.

Say for instance you’re looking to target the 60+ age range. What platform you chose, the types of posts you publish and the language you use should differ in comparison to a brand trying to draw in a much younger audience. Ask yourself:

  • How old are my typical customers, what gender and socio-economic group are they likely to be and where do they live?
  • When is my audience most likely to be online?
  • What are their interests? Are they more likely to engage with videos, blogs or case studies?
  • What is the purpose of your social media? Are you expecting your audience to click on to your website, take on board certain information or buy products?
  1. Carry out some competitor analysis

You keep an eye on what your competitors are doing in the real world, right? So do the same on social media!

Regular competitor analysis is a great way to understand where the strengths and weaknesses of your competition lie, as well as your own. You can also pick up tried and tested ideas that are likely to go down well with your audience, as well as spot where any threats to your business may be hiding.

  1. Monitor your social media marketing strategy

Monitoring the performance of your social media is so important, otherwise it’s impossible to really know what’s working and what isn’t. You can also use this data to work out if you’re getting a good return on investment. We suggest keeping a close eye on the following:

Engagement:This could be likes, clicks, shares and mentions. How many have occurred during a particular timeframe?

How many new followers you’ve got:More followers is good! If your number of followers is going up this is a great sign. But if they’re dropping like flies you might want to look at why and make some changes to your social media strategy.

Impressions:So how many times have your posts shown up on people’s timelines?

Click-through-rate:How many people have clicked through from your social media post to your website?

Customer care:Are you responding quickly and effectively to customer queries, issues and complaints?

  1. Get a great social media management agency on board

Devising an effective social media marketing strategy, staying on top of social marketing trends, writing and uploading posts, checking stats and answering customer queries takes up a huge amount of time. Frankly there often aren’t enough hours in the day!
